Testing Helps Treatment

So what makes TriState Hand & Occupational Therapy different from other therapy practices in the area? And why should you care? Well, if you were having pain, numbness, or tingling in your spine, shoulder, hands, or feet, wouldn’t you want to know what’s wrong? And wouldn’t you want someone to measure your improvements in a safe, effective manner? Well, we have that here, and no other therapy practice in this area does! I am talking about the painless nerve testing device, the Pressure Specified Sensory Device (PSSD), also known as QST, Qualitative Sensory Testing.
When you come to TriState, you may be wondering what is wrong, and what’s causing your problem. The PSSD is a very effective way to find out what is wrong, and because it is painless, we can frequently re-measure to make sure your nerves are recovering.
The device can be quite useful for disorders such as:
• carpal tunnel syndrome
• tarsal tunnel syndrome
• diabetes
• peripheral neuropathy
• compression of the nerves in the neck and low back
• sensory loss due to stroke

So, if you have numbness or pain in your hands or feet, this device can determine if the problem is nerve-related, allowing us to treat you more effectively. This is the part that can get complicated. Sometimes, a patient has diabetes and a back problem, and she complains that her feet hurt. Is it coming from her back, or is it the diabetes affecting her feet? The PSSD helps make that determination, and then we can be sure we are treating the right thing.
And if you have diabetes, we can tell if you have peripheral neuropathy, how severe it really is, and whether we can help. Then later on, as your diabetes changes, we can re-measure the sensation in your feet and see how they are doing. We’ll let you and your doctor know if the nerves are damaged. Best of all, because we offer Anodyne Infrared Light Therapy, we can help restore sensation to your feet. The PSSD is particularly well suited for painless measurement of diabetic peripheral neuropathy. We have seen and measured remarkable improvements in sensation of the feet following Anodyne Infrared Light Therapy. Because we measure, we know it’s working and helping to restore the nerves.
So if you think all therapy practices are the same, think again! We are the only therapy practice that uses the PSSD to help determine the source of your problem. We can also measure nerve recovery from carpal tunnel syndrome and tarsal tunnel syndrome, compression of the nerves in the neck and back, and from a stroke as well. This can assist your recovery and speed up the process greatly. We treat what you have, and not what you don’t!
