Usually the numbness is worse at night but can occur during the day with repetitive gripping, pinching or driving. When patients get pain as well in the wrists or hands the problem has gone on for awhile. Here is a list of some of the causes of carpel tunnel: Genetically small carpal tunnel Injury that causes swelling Under active thyroid Repeated use of vibrating tools Fluid retention (pregnancy/menopause) Arthritis Computer use repeatedly Assembly line work (manufactory, sewing, finishing, cleaning, poultry work) The average cost of carpal tunnel syndrome including medical bills and lost time from work is estimated to be $30,000.00 for each. People who get these symptoms usually have to cut back on activities they enjoy such as gardening, lifting the kids, home activities or driving. Getting a good night’s sleep also becomes a problem. If work activities are painful this becomes a significant problem. It means they need to choose between their health or a paycheck. No fun. There are nine tendons that run between the fingers and the forearm. These all run through the carpal tunnel. So does the median nerve. This tunnel is about the size of a dime. Not much room! So if anything reduces the size of the carpal tunnel it puts pressure on the nerve. This causes pain and numbness and tingling. I have found with the sensory painless nerve testing that most patients do not have a lot of nerve damage.
